If you are looking for a minimalistic audio player, with interesting features, you should definitely have a look at musikcube. This terminal-based player looks quite simple on the surface, but it comes with various features and capabilities. It lets you compile a library, manage your songs, and you can even use the application as a streaming server. It may look simple on the surface, but you can't say the same about its functionality.

You don't have to go through an installation process before running musikcube. Its components come in a ZIP archive, and you only need to extract them. The software doesn't require any codecs or drivers, so you can launch it right away. It works on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X, and it is also available for Android and Raspberry Pi.

The application's user interface is essentially a terminal window with some basic graphical elements. You can use the mouse, but it feels a bit more comfortable if you stick with the keyboard. The keys for switching between browsing mode, filters, tracks list, queue and settings are displayed at the bottom of the window, and you can find a list with all key bindings in the general settings menu, where you can make some changes if you need to.

Despite its simple appearance, musikcube comes with some useful features under its hood. You can target one or more music folders in the general settings menu, from which the application will build your library instantly. What's more, musikcube will sort all your tracks automatically, and it lets you filter them by album, artist and genre.

You can use musikcube for nothing more than enjoying your music, but you can also explore the other features it has to offer. If you take a look in its general settings menu, you will find options for switching to different output drivers, playback modes, connecting to radio stations or configuring plug-ins. Another important option allows you to set up a media server, which gives you the possibility of streaming your songs to other devices, so you can have your computer in one room and your music playing all over the house.

The features and capabilities of musikcube are an excellent combination of simplicity and effectiveness.

Pros

The software has a minimalistic user interface, but it is still quite comfortable. It sorts your music automatically when you import it. You can also use it as a media server.

Cons

There are no serious issues to address.
